ORTHODONTIC ASSISTING TRAINING

This program is focused on Orthodontics knowledge, hands-on and practical training. Students will receive a hard copy of the material they need to study on before attending the class. Every session will start with a test at the school under the supervision of an instructor. The instructor will then review the didactic material and answer questions. Continued with the hands-on training on manikins and student partners.
Student shall fulfill the minimum requirement of the course.
A maximum of 10 students per cohort may do the internship portion of the program at one time with one instructor.
The total number and percentage of students who completed or graduated from each program offered by the school as of the end of the last academic year is 0.
These programs are new. Therefore, the number of students who graduate, the number of students who are placed, or the starting salary you can earn after finishing these educational programs are unknown at this time.

Program Objectives

1. Demonstrate a thorough comprehension of advanced clinical terminology.
2. Understand progressive orthodontic treatment options including the assistant’s role and the benefit to the patient.
3. Be familiar with the assistant’s role in minimizing risk in an orthodontic practice.
4. Know the roles which may be filled by well-trained senior clinical team members to assist the doctor.
5. Understand how to prevent unnecessary repairs and emergencies during orthodontic treatment and the benefits to the practice.

Course Outline

MODULE 1:  INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAM, DENTAL ANATOMY AND BASIC BACKGROUND ON ORTHODONTIC PRACTICE ACTIVITY, ETHICS AND LAW.
Didactic Session 7 Hours /Final exam 1 Hours
The module is an introduction to the program, dental anatomy and basic background on orthodontic practice activity, ethics and the law.
MODULE 2:  PREPARATION RADIATION, OSHA SAFETY, STERILIZATION, INFECTION CONTROL, EXAM
Didactic Session 7 Hour Lecture/Written exam 1 hour, This course will provide students with all the didactic material they need to study for the RHS and ICE exams through DANB.  Instructor will review the material with students, answer questions and prepare students for the exam.

MODULE 3: ORTHODONTIC TERMINOLOGY, INSTRUMENTS, TREATMENT PLANNING, PROFESSIONALISM AND PATIENT MANAGEMENT.
Didactic Session 7 Hours/Final exam 1 Hours
The completion of this course will educate the student on the general concepts of the orthodontic practice, orthodontic treatment, charting, oral anatomy, and patient education.

MODULE 4 ORTHODONTIC RECORDS AND RADIATION
Didactic Session:  1 Hours /6 hours pre-clinical session /1 hour Written exam.
This course will provide students with the importance of orthodontic record taking and the use of written assessment records and medical history as well as effective methods of clinical photography and the types of radiographs and their relevance in orthodontic treatment . Students will learn an effective system for the storage of orthodontic models and photography.

MODULE 5:  ORTHODONTIC IMPRESSIONS, MODELS, REMOVABLE APPLIANCES And RETAINERS
Didactic Session:  1 Hours /2 hours laboratory session/4 hours pre-clinical session/1 hour Written exam.
This course will provide students proper setting, evaluating, and storing of impressions. They will proper setting, evaluating, and storing of impressions and the proper setting, evaluating, and storing of impressions. Students will discuss hydrocolloid impression materials, their uses, mixing, and techniques as well as safety and infection control in the dental laboratory. Students will learn how to help patients be able to give a proper impression.

MODULE 6: ORTHODONTIC FIXED APPLIANCE, FITTING, SIZING AND CEMENTING/ REMOVING ORTHODONTIC BANDS
Didactic Session:  1 Hours/2 hours laboratory session/4 hours pre-clinical session /1 hour Written exam.
The completion of this course will educate the student on the concepts of effectively sizing, fitting and cementing bands to teeth. After completing a Board approved course for sizing, fitting and cementing orthodontic bands the student will be allowed to perform this function on the orthodontic patient.

MODULE 7:  PREPARING TEETH FOR BONDING
Didactic Session 1 Hour Lecture/Laboratory Session 1 hour/Written exam 1 hour/Pre-clinical session 5 hours.
This course will educate the student on the concepts to effectively prepare the tooth surface to adhere an orthodontic bracket or clear aligner attachment to tooth enamel and other materials that are used to restore teeth. The student will understand and effectively demonstrate the sequence of steps, patient management, and the different materials used to effectively prepare teeth for bonding of brackets.

MODULE 8: BRACKET PREPOSITIONING, BOND CURING AND REMOVAL OF ORTHODONTIC BRACKETS
Didactic Session:  1 Hours/2 hours laboratory session/4 hours pre-clinical session/1 hour Written exam.
The completion of this course will educate the student on the concepts of effectively sizing, fitting and cementing bands to teeth. After completing a Board approved course for sizing, fitting and cementing orthodontic bands the student will be allowed to perform this function on the orthodontic patient.

MODULE 9:  ARCHWIRE PLACEMENTS & LIGATION
Didactic Session 1 Hour Lecture/Laboratory Session 2 hours/Written exam 1 hour,
This course will educate the student on the concepts to effectively place and ligate an archwire. The student will understand and effectively demonstrate the sequence of steps, patient management and the different materials used to place and archwire and ligation (required for the DA). The completion of this course will educate the student on the concepts of effective placement of archwires and ligation.

MODULE 10  INVISALIGN RECORDS, PVS IMPRESSIONS
Didactic Session 1 Hour Lecture/Laboratory Session 30 min,/Written exam 1 hour,/ Pre-clinical session 1:30 hours.
This course will educate the student on the concepts of how to fit impression trays and the proper technique for taking accurate PVS impressions. Students will learn to avoid the common mistakes when taking impressions.

MODULE 11: DIGITAL IMPRESSIONS, CLEAR ALIGNER ATTACHMENT BONDING
The completion of this course will educate the student on Clear Aligners as an alternative to traditional braces that are designed to help guide teeth into their proper position. Student will learn that similar to braces, clear aligners use a gradual force to control tooth movement, but without metal wires or brackets. Student will discover that aligners are made of a strong plastic material and are fabricated to fit each person’s mouth.

MODULE 12 CPR, ORTHODONTICS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, EMPLOYMENT SKILLS & JOB INTERVIEW; GRADUATION
Students learn how to deal with the orthodontic emergencies. Includes understanding patient attitudes, reassuring the patient, personal appearance, dress code, personal attitude.
Job interview techniques are presented including describing the type of job the dental assistant is seeking and what they offer the employer, locating employment opportunities, constructing a resume, interviewing skills, how to answer questions, and salary negotiation.
CPR will be taught by an authorized AHA Instructor offer in-person classroom training and skills sessions.
Students are required to pass the exam and the practical test of CPR.

Internship

The students will spend 16 hours internship at the Top Nova Orthodontic clinic where they will be utilizing the skills learned throughout the course. They will be practicing skills including:
Those necessary to provide a safe environment for patients and orthodontic staff.

  1. Demonstrating an understanding of basic orthodontic theory as it relates to patient treatment.
  2. Performance of chair side and clinical skills knowledgeably and proficiently.
  3. Effective communication skills, both written and oral, when dealing with orthodontic patients and the dental health team.
  4. Exhibiting a professional and collaborative work ethic that recognizes the legal and ethical responsibility of those employed in the dental field.
